About Port of Miami

Known as the "Cruise Capital of the World," the Port of Miami attracts thousands of yacht owners and boaters every year. The Port of Miami brings in billions of dollars to support the local economy. Every year, the Port of Miami has brought in at least 14 billion dollars. Cargo ships are the leading contributor to this high figure. Leading cruise lines will board and depart from the Port of Miami. The Port of Miami has a fascinating history and has faced its share of obstacles in operations. Hurricanes have caused the Port of Miami to shut down on multiple occasions in the past few years.

The way in which the Port of Miami originated was due to a hurricane. In 1900, a hurricane caused a split in Miami Beach. The split in Miami Beach created a new island called Fisher Island. The cut allowed boats to travel between South Beach and Fisher Island. The cut also provided for the Main Channel of the Port of Miami. Millionaires have created islands that surround the Port of Miami. The Dodge and Sam's Island are just two of the more popular islands surrounding the Port of Miami. In 1960, the Port obtained additional lands from Broward County to continue to meet the demand from wealthy boaters and cruise lines.

The Port of Miami is named after Dante Fascell. Dante Fascell was a Florida Congressman who served for 19 terms. The Port of Miami is a leading provider of jobs in the south Florida economy. Over 176,000 people work in careers that relate in some way to the Port. Millions of passengers depart from the Port every year. About 4 million people travel using the Port of Miami every year.
